South Africa won the first test

The end of the match was a surprise as Bangladesh were hopeful that they would be able to register their first Test win over South Africa by chasing 274 runs in the final innings. By the end of the fourth day’s play, Bangladesh had lost three wickets for 11 runs in the second innings and the fall of wickets continued on the fifth day.

Bangladesh bundled out for just 53 runs in the second innings

For Bangladesh, only Najmul Hossain Shanto (26) and tail batsman Taskin Ahmed (14) could reach double digits. South Africa took the remaining seven wickets in less than an hour on the fifth and final day to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

This score of Bangladesh is its second lowest score in Test cricket. In 2018 against West Indies, the team was reduced to 43 runs. The team’s score of 53 runs is also the lowest score of a team at the Kingsmead ground in Durban. Despite the huge margin of defeat, the match was very competitive most of the time. Bangladesh at one point seemed to have the upper hand on the fourth day when South Africa were bundled out for 204 in the second innings despite being in good shape after scoring 116 for one.

Keshav Maharaj took 7 wickets

Bangladesh kept history by winning their first ODI series on South African soil on the current tour but Maharaj and Harmer sabotaged their hopes of registering their maiden Test win in the country. Maharaj has a total of 141 Test wickets with seven wickets at home and is South Africa’s most successful spinner since the team’s return to international cricket after apartheid. The second Test will begin in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
